1st September 2020 – a day of historical responsibility
One date – two milestones:
Twenty-five years ago today, the National Fund of the Republic of Austria opened its doors to all victims of National Socialism for the first time. By the middle of the month, almost 10,000 letters and applications had already been received from Holocaust survivors from all over the world. It could not have been foreseen during that first year that a quarter of a century later survivors would still be turning to the National Fund or that the Fund would be entrusted with numerous other tasks.
Today, 25 years after the establishment of the National Fund, an amendment to the Citizenship Act comes into force as a further gesture of historical responsibility – it opens the door to Austrian citizenship for the survivors’ children and their children’s children.
We are happy to share the link to the online questionnaire as first step towards citizenship.
