Cemetery Simmering/Zentralfriedhof Tor I

Cemetery

Description

During the course of the city’s expansion, in 1877 the Jewish Community Vienna acquired as a burial site a 118,000 m² parcel of land, later expanded to cover 260,000 m², attached to the newly-established Vienna Central Cemetery. It had already begun to serve its purpose in 1879, following the closure of the cemetery in Währing. By 1916, almost 80,000 Jewish community members had been buried here. Around 3,000 of the 60,000 graves were destroyed by stray Allied bomb hits.
